(BaseballSTL) Adam Wainwright will make his third start of spring training this afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium against the Marlins and manager Mike Matheny says he'll probably get more than 60 pitches in as he starts building towards the 100 he needs for the regular season.
Following him, 2012 first round pick - and surprise of camp - Michael Wacha will throw between 50 and 60 pitches as he does the same thing. Wacha is getting ready for his minor league season as GM John Mozeliak says despite opening a lot of eyes this spring he's "unlikely" to make the majors.
Lefty Randy Choate is also scheduled to pitch along with Jason Motte, Edward Mujica, Maikel Cleto, Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon.
The Cardinals recently moved Trevor Rosenthal to the bullpen, in large part, because there was not enough innings for him to continue to be stretched out as a starter. At some point, with the starters getting closer to 100 pitches, there won't be enough innings for Wacha either. But the fact he's still getting them now, and Rosenthal isn't, seems quite telling.
Wacha is yet to give up an earned run in three appearances this spring training and the more impressive he looks the more intriguing his situation becomes. Likely headed to AA-Springfield before camp started, there's a possibility he could be AAA-Memphis bound to begin the season, with the possibility of a midseason call up on the horizon.
