(BaseballStL) — Adam Wainwright’s first All Star Game start began with a pause, as the Cardinal ace stepped off the hill to give the crown din Minnesota a chance to cheer Derek Jeter in his final appearance in the Midsummer Classic.

Once the ovation died down The Captain did his thing, roping an opposite field double. Mike Trout scored him with a two-strike triple off the wall in right center.

Robinson Cano was felled by a curveball that dove into the dirt for the first out, but Miguel Cabrera wouldn’t let Wainwright off the hook. The superstar Tiger blasted an 0-1 sinker out of the park, stretching the AL lead to 3-0.

The 32-year-old’s curveball claimed another victim when Jose Bautista chased the hook for the second out, and Nelson Cruz ended the inning with a grounder to short.

Wainwright will likely exit after only one inning, surrendering three runs on three hits and fanning two.
