(BaseballStL) -- Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game and avoided losing three consecutive starts for a fourth time in his career in a 7-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
Wainwright pitched masterfully for seven innings before the Athletics broke up the shutout with a run in the eighth inning.
The Cardinals ace allowed just the one run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters for his fourth complete game of the season. He needed 112 pitches to get through 33 batters faced.
In his only other previous start against the Athletics in his career, Wainwright allowed one unearned run over eight innings pitched in a 4-3 win on June 19, 2010.
The victory gave Wainwright an NL-leading 11 wins this season.
