(BaseballStL) -- Allen Craig has shown he can hold up as a designated hitter, but a return to first base still hasn't been determined.

Craig, who hasn't played the field since injuring his foot on September 4, spent part of Friday's workout day at Busch Stadium fielding ground balls at first base.

It was a fast paced workout with Jose Oquendo slapping grounders his way and lasted approximately for ten minutes.

The only thing left to be determined is whether Craig will be able to play the field in any of the three games slated in St. Louis starting with Game 3 on Saturday.

“Defensively we'll take whatever we can get,” manager Mike Matheny said. “Every day is another step. Tomorrow we'll get him to take more ground balls and get him moving. He also has the potential to possibly play in the outfield.”

Matheny was encouraged with Craig’s at-bats as the team’s designated hitter for the first two games of the World Series in Boston. He collected a hit in each game and reached base twice in the 4-2 Game 2 win. He is 2-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts this series.

Craig's fill-in, Matt Adams, said he hasn't been told anything in regards to Craig's status for Game 3 and will prepare the same.

“We’re just going to show up tomorrow,” Adams said. “I’m just going to be ready and, of course, he’s going to be ready. So whatever Mike (Matheny) chooses to do that’s what’s going to stick.”
