(BaseballStL) -- In the midst of news that shortstop Rafael Furcal will likely miss the entire 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery, the Cardinals also made another - albeit smaller - announcement. Heralded prospect Trevor Rosenthal will not be a starter for the remainder of spring training and will be in the bullpen for the foreseeable future.

Mike Matheny and GM John Mozeliak both said today that at this point in spring training it's really hard to get too many starters extended innings because the regular season starters (Adam Wainwright, Jake Westbrook, Jaime Garcia, Lance Lynn) are going to start pitching deeper into games as they build their pitch count up.

Did you want to see Trevor Rosenthal start or work out of the bullpen? Share your thoughts.

And with Joe Kelly competing with Shelby Miller for the fifth spot in the Cards rotation, those two need innings as well. That makes it very hard for Rosenthal to get innings too. That's why they're going to start dialing him back now as a reliever, especially given how impactful he was in the playoffs last fall.

Mozeliak said he'd be surprised if Rosenthal wasn't on the major league roster so that shores up yet another spot in the big league bullpen.
