(BaseballStL) - Cards top prospect Oscar Taveras is still rehabbing from ankle surgery over the offseason and will not be available when the team starts its exhibition schedule this afternoon against the Marlins.
"I watched him run yesterday and it seemed like he was doing really well but then he got fatigued," Mike Matheny said. "I think a lot of it is just that confidence in his mind that he's not quite there."
Taveras is doing all drills with the team and isn't skipping anything. The team is just now waiting for him to do them at full speed.
"I think he told you guys he felt around 80% (in his ankle). Well 80% isn't going to work. Once we feel confident that he's not holding anything back then we can use him in the games," Matheny said.
Taveras is pushing for a spot on the Major League team this spring in the outfield. Peter Bourjos is projected to start in center field with Jon Jay and Shane Robinson providing further depth. What the 21-year old Dominican Republic native can do in March will affect that competition.
