JUPITER, Fla. (BaseballSTL) -- The Cardinals top prospect, Oscar Taveras, one of the elite prospects in all of major league baseball, will make the start in center field today when the Mets come to Jupiter for a 12:05 pm (St. Louis time) start.
Taveras has been a center fielder for his entire minor league career thus far but is projected as a corner outfielder in the major leagues. His versatility is seen as a big plus though so the club appears willing to give him a look in center.
Matt Carpenter continues to make starts at second base a day after manager Mike Matheny, who's expected to leave town for a couple days to have surgery on his back, pretty much said the experiment is over. Matheny said he'd be comfortable putting Carpenter there during a regular season game. He would not say, however, who would be the Opening Day second baseman.
Jaime Garcia makes his third Grapefruit League start of 2013. The rest of the lineup is as follows:
1) Daniel Descalso - 3B
2) Matt Carpenter - 2B
3) Allen Craig - 1B
4) Matt Adams - DH
5) Oscar Taveras - CF
6) Shane Robinson - RF
7) Rob Johnson - C
8) Adron Chambers - LF
9) Ronny Cedeno - SS
Following Jaime Garcia on the mound will be a group consisting of Trevor Rosenthal, Edward Mujica, Eduardo Sanchez, Victor Marte, John Gast, Barret Browning, Kevin Siegrist and Keith Butler.
