(BaseballStL) -- Max Scherzer has become the first St. Louis area product to win a Cy Young Award. Scherzer had a 21-3 record with the Detroit Tigers this year, and received 28 of the 30 first place votes for the American League award. Scherzer also led the AL in WHIP (walks and hits per inning) at 0.970. He was second in the league in strikeouts with 240.

After learning he had won the award, Scherzer tweeted: Ahhhhh!!! What a feeling!! Can’t wait to get my hands on this trophy!!

Scherzer played at Parkway Central high school at the University of Missouri. The Cardinals drafted Scherzer in the 43rd round after his senior year at Parkway Central. He declined to sign, opting instead to accept a scholarship to Mizzou.

The Cardinals may have another chance to add Scherzer to their roster. He’s due to become a free agent after the 2014 season, and his name has come up in trade rumors this week. It would appear highly unlikely though that the Cardinals, with their depth in pitching, would be a serious contender in the Scherzer sweepstakes.
