(BaseballStL) - As a rookie left-hander Kevin Siegrist didn't just take Major League Baseball by surprise a year ago.  He took the city of St. Louis and maybe even his organization by surprise.

Sunday marked the beginning of what could be an encore performance for the youngster.  He threw his first live bullpen session after getting scratched last week with soreness.

"I felt good," Siegrist said. "Everything was coming out well and I felt comfortable so it was a good day."

He faced a group featuring Jhonny Peralta and Tony Cruz among others.  Siegrist says he's working on his slider getting a lot better this year.  He believes that pitch needs to be more consistent to give him a chance at staying successful in the big leagues.

But, ultimately, he'd love to have a larger role within the Cards pitching staff.

"You can't be comfortable where you're at.  You always try and (take on) new challenges.  Whatever this team needs me to do I'll do it," Siegrist said.

With Jaime Garcia out of the rotation and one fewer starter moving back to the bullpen, it could create more of a need for someone such as Siegrist to take on that larger role.
