(BaseballStL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals are talking with the agent of utility man Marco Scutaro in Nashville during the Winter Meetings -- but IT IS the Winter Meetings so it very well could be  just a rumor.

I came across the Scutaro news/rumor from a tweet from Rob Rains, of TheStLSportsPage.com, who also claimed it to be just a rumor for the moment.

The one problem with signing Scutaro, who helped lead the Giants to the World Series, is that he likely wants a three-year deal.  The Cardinals won’t offer him three years on a contract considering he is 37 years old.

It is true that Scutaro is coming off one of his best seasons as a big leaguer especially since being traded from the Colorado Rockies this year.  Scutaro batted .362 and drove in 44 runs in 61 games played with the Giants since the trade.

The Cardinals know all about the pesky infielder after he went 14-for-28 and scored six runs in the National League Championship Series and earned the series MVP award.  You may also remember him as the player that Matt Holliday took out on a controversial slide during the series.

So what would make him a good fit for the Cardinals?

A one-year contract for starters.  No team with a farm system like the Cardinals would sign a 37-year-old infielder to a three-year contract.  It’s just bad business.

The length of the contract could be the only thing keeping these two parties apart.

The Cardinals desperately need a middle infielder and that’s exactly what Scutaro is, a solid middle infielder.  Cardinals prospect Kolten Wong doesn’t appear ready for the big leagues and will need some extra at-bats this season, but it is safe to assume that he could be called upon in 2014.

Also, if the Cardinals want Scutaro then they will be competing with the Giants, who have made it a point that the team wants him back.

There is also talks that Skip Schumaker may be dealt.  Stay tuned.
