(FootballStL) -- I'm being told tonight that Jeff Fisher has "unofficially, officially" hired Rob Ryan to be his defensive coordinator. Good move? Time will tell, but he'll be a fun addition to an already outgoing, fun staff to cover.

Ryan knows defense. The whole Ryan family knows defense. But his detractors say he's more bluster than results. I'm not sure I agree with that. Injuries decimated his Cowboys defense this season. Before the injuries, his defense was formidable.

The other knock on Ryan will be that he has most recently run a 3-4 not a 4-3 defense. This is NOT a big deal. First, he did run a 4-3 while coordinating the Raiders defense. And he learned most of what he knows about stopping offense from his dad, Buddy. Those Bears defenses that ate offenses alive were 4-3 defenses. Besides, any coach worth his salt can adjust scheme to fit the personnel he has.

One other point to make here. Fisher took his time. He must be convinced that he and Ryan are on the same page and that Ryan will be enthusiastic about running the style of defense Fisher likes.

I was already looking forward to the 2013 season. Things just got even more interesting.
