The Saint Louis University Men’s Basketball team left campus Monday afternoon for San Jose, CA and their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
There were no fans lining Lindell to say goodbye and good luck or even a police escort to the airport. For as much praise as the Bills have gotten from national basketball writers, experts, and opposing coaches, it was actually a fitting departure for a team that’s habitually humble.
If you’re in love with basketball like I am, and appreciate the not so sexy nuances like help defense and a great back cut out of well run motion offense, watching SLU is like finding your soul mate.
That said, despite all their success this season, you almost cringe hearing them become a dark horse to win it all among hoops pundits. I guess there’s something comfortable about being under the radar. The Billikens won’t surprise their opponent, but at this point of the season there aren’t many surprises.
Hearing Coach Jim Crews and his players speak before boarding that bus you felt a legitimate sincerity as they discussed taking it a game and a time and focusing on the task at hand. Sure, it’s rhetoric you’re used to hearing from coaches and athletes, but with SLU it’s believable because it’s a truth they exhibit every time they take the floor.
Whatever happens its been really fun to watch and I’m very excited I’ll get to cover SLU for KMOV. I know it’s not exactly what you’re used to seeing me do at News 4, but I covered University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, and Indiana University during last years tournament when I worked in Louisville at WHAS 11 and I’m happy to get the chance to do it again this year with a program I grew up following.
I’ll be posting here and please follow me on Twitter, https://twitter.com/Mike_Colombo and on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/MikeColomboKmov for the latest news and notes on the Road to the Final Four.
