PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Baseball StL)  – Shane Robinson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored and hit his first home run of the spring Wednesday. And he didn’t even start the game.

Robinson continued his impressive start to the Grapefruit League season after entering as a pinch-runner for Matt Holliday in the top of the third inning of the Cardinals’ 12-4 win over the New York Mets.

The speedy outfielder is fighting with Adron Chambers and newcomer Justin Christian for the final spot on the Cardinals bench. And although it’s early, he’s gotten off to a nice start.

Robinson homered in the sixth and hit a ground-rule double that bounced over the fence in left-center in the eighth, improving to 5-for-7 in three games with two doubles, five RBI and five runs scored.

“Shane can play a terrific outfield and we’ve seen him jump a few over the fence, he had two really nice short strokes today,” said manager Mike Matheny. “We know he’s comfortable coming off the bench and putting a pretty good at-bat together too.

“Shane has the ability to play center field and brings a lot value to the table, but we still have a long spring to go and we watched Justin have a good day today and Chambers had a good day yesterday so all the guys are playing pretty well right now.”

Robinson was with the Cardinals for almost the entire season last year, giving him what would appear to be a slight lead in the battle for the final outfield spot.
