(FootballSTL) – The St. Louis Rams on Tuesday released second-year offensive guard Rokevious Watkings, according to ESPN NFL contributor Adam Caplan.
The news was confirmed by St. Louis Post-Dispatch beat writer Jim Thomas, who tweeted the release came after Watkins showed up to training camp well over his target weight.
Watkins, the Rams’ 2012 fifth-round pick, was suspended by the NFL one game in May for breaking the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher at the time publicly disagreed with the decision, but it appears the weight issue was too much to overcome.
Watkins had been a candidate to start at left guard. Chris Williams and Shelly Smith now become the favorites for the job.
