ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) -- The St. Louis Rams players donated a large sum of money to help offset the hospital costs for a Lindenwood football player who suffered a spinal cord injury last month.
Sterling Thomas, an 18-year-old freshman cornerback, suffered the horrific injury in a 45-30 win over Missouri Southern on October 27. He was listed in critical condition shortly after being hospitalized and has since been transferred to a medical center in Atlanta.
“We were in London and we weren’t aware of the accident until we got back,” Jeff Fisher said. “We started talking and understanding the difficult road that Sterling has ahead of him, from a rehab standpoint, and the burden that would be placed on the family.”
“So, in the team meeting about a week ago we decided that we would collect some money. Last week over those three days we raised about $38,000, the players and then Mr. (Stan) Kroenke matched the largest player contribution.”
The check was for a little over $42,000.
“They’re our neighbors and we wanted to help out. True freshman, battled on the field all year and then to have that happen the last game, very difficult set of circumstances,” Fisher added.
