(BaseballStL) -- The Cardinals first official workout is Sunday. The position players aren't required to be here until next Wednesday. New manager Mike Matheny says he's expecting everybody to arrive on time.

Tyler Greene is one of the position players here early. He spent one-on-one time with Jose Oquendo Saturday taking ground balls and working on turning the double play at second base.

Greene will be given every opportunity to win the second base job as a regular. Skip Schumaker and Daniel Descalso are also in the competition, but Greene's offensive potential makes him the favorite to win the job.

Lefty reliever J.C. Romero told me he signed as a free agent with the Cardinals because he thinks they have a great chance to win the World Series again. Romero has always been an emotional guy on the mound, sometimes too emotional. He told me there were times he'd get so excited pitching that he'd get migraine headaches. He's trying to learn to settle himself down and stay under control. He thinks that would make him a much better pitcher in clutch situations, and help him get rid of the headaches.

The weather couldn't be better for the Cardinals, with sunny guys and temperatures in the low 80's.
