(BaseballStL) – The Cardinals flame-throwing closer made his fourth appearance in four days for the Redbirds Sunday and blew the last game of the series against the Braves by walking in the tying run.
From Thursday through Sunday, Rosenthal threw 75 pitches over 4.1 innings, earning 3 out of 4 save opportunities.
When asked following Sunday's matinee performance, manager Mike Matheny simply stated that it was a push to send Rosenthal out for his fourth straight day.
"One pitch right there. One pitch away," Matheny continued, "Once it gets to two outs, it's his game. He's a tough kid. He wanted the ball [Sunday]. I pushed him [Sunday] and it didn't work."
Rosenthal had never thrown more than two days in a row this season. He had never even thrown more than 40 pitches in those two-day stretches.
But after Sunday's game, Rosenthal continued to brush off any concerns about his readiness.
"Physically it felt good," he said. "I just came ready to go. I just did my normal routine. Just a tough one."
Monday's off day comes as a recharge for Rosenthal and others in the bullpen including Carlos Martinez, who also made his fourth appearance Sunday.
