(BaseballStL) -- Mike Matheny, honored Friday with a bobblehead giveaway at Busch, said while he isn't a collector, he did set some aside for the future.
"It's a cool thing. I kept a bunch of them for my kids someday," he said. "Having the catcher's gear back on seemed only natural to me."
The bobblehead is Matheny as a catcher, not as a manager. However, it's not the first time the skipper had been immortalized in bobbly glory.
"I had one back in the early 2000s, and they did me some favors," he chuckled. "I (as the bobblehead) was really jacked up with muscle and Mark McGwire is standing next to me and he was extremely mad. They just made one of him and he was really dumpy looking. So he wore me out, and he wore out everybody on that. He wasn't happy."
The first 25,000 fans will receive the new Mike Matheny bobblehead, and while this time he may be less muscle-bound, he still believes it's not quite an accurate depiction.
"I think it's head is larger than what my head is in proportion to the rest of my body," he said. Who says he doesn't have a sense of humor?
While Yadier Molina is back with the club, Trevor Rosenthal will be away for a second night. The young set up man is a new father, as he and his wife Lindsey had their first child early Friday morning.
Matheny said he visited with them in the hospital, and though Rosenthal would like to be with the club, both he and the team put family first.
"He was wanting to come in, but I think it was a real long past 24 hours for him. He needs to be with his family," Matheny said. "Lindsay and Trevor looked pretty tired as new parents, but everybody is healthy and lots of smiles."
