(BaseballStL) -- 2013 is done and now it’s on to getting the St. Louis Cardinals set for 2014. Lots of decisions will be made between now and the start of spring training. Not the least of which is whether Carlos Beltran will return. Cards GM John Mozeliak said today the club did make a qualifying offer to him in order to secure draft pick compensation should he leave.
Everything else, however, is just as muddled at this point as the Beltran situation. What will the team do at shortstop? Can the bench get better? Will David Freese be back? And what are they going to do with all of these starting pitchers?
Mozeliak says he has a good idea in his mind of what he wants to do. But that doesn’t guarantee that he’ll be able to get it done.
“I think everyone in this room has opinions on where we can get better and I would imagine they’re not far off from how we’re thinking about it upstairs (in the front office),” Mozeliak said. “It’s a lot of - yes, we can identify what we need to do - now the question is can we go out and implement it and get it done.”
One potential question that has been answered already is what the 9th inning will look like to begin next year. Trevor Rosenthal has made no secret to the fact he wants to start. But Mike Matheny made it clear today, for now, that would not be happening.
Rosenthal is the closer.
“There’s no reason to go any differently than how we ended,” Matheny said. “And Trevor Rosenthal’s a guy that’s going in there and getting saves for us. So that’s how we’re heading into this spring.”
