With today's announcement from the Cardinals that closer Jason Motte will miss an undetermined period of time with an elbow strain, this brings to light the history the team has in dealing with such injuries.
The Cards organization has significant experience with elbow injuries, from Chris Carpenter to Skip Schumaker to Nick Punto to Rafael Furcal. Sometimes the treatment plan worked - Schumaker and Punto - while other times it did not - Furcal.
GM John Mozeliak says he understands how closely this current situation with Motte will be handled given the past.
"Experiencing what we just went through with (Rafael) Furcal, I think we might be under a little tighter microscope than normal," Mozeliak said. "But we just want to be smart about it. Our medical staff does an excellent job with this and handling it. When you look at the success we've had with getting guys back, I'm pretty confident in the group we have in place."
Mitchell Boggs will be the Cardinals closer with Trevor Rosenthal and Edward Mujica getting late inning work as well. Fernando Salas seems likely to make the team now, too, and either Joe Kelly or Shelby Miller could provide needed innings out of the bullpen.
