(BaseballStL) — Jason Motte made his second trip to the disabled list in 2014, this time fighting a lower back sprain.
The 32-year-old reliever began the season on the DL, debuting on May 21. This time he heads to the 15-day list in a move retroactive to August 1.
Nick Greenwood has been called up to take his place. The 27-year-old appeared in nine games with the Cardinals earlier this season, and drew praise from Mike Matheny when he headed back to Memphis.
“The conversation we had with him was, ‘Nick, you gotta realize what you did. It wasn’t just coming in and just filling a spot. You bailed us out of some huge predicaments, you really impressed us,’” Matheny said back on July 23.
Greenwood threw 19 innings for the Cardinals in his nine games, going four straight against the Dodgers on June 28. Over his appearances he struck out 10 and walked four en route to a 4.74 ERA.
Motte threw 21 innings in 23 games since returning from Tommy John surgery, posting a 4.91 ERA despite 17 scoreless appearances.
