(BasebalLStL) – For the second straight game, All-Star and Platinum Glove catcher Yadier Molina is out of the starting line-up for the Cardinals.
Molina did not have an at-bat in the Redbirds 5-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday, and again Tony Cruz will be behind the plate.
Molina has struggled as the calendar turned over to the month of June. After hitting .344 in April, Molina has seen a steady drop in his average – from .266 in May to just .143 for the start of June.
It’s still early, but he has just three hits in his last 21 at-bats and he hasn’t hit a home run since May 24th. And he’s only collected one RBI in his last 17 games.
The last time Molina didn’t start in consecutive games was July 6 and 7 of 2013 when he was suffered from an injured knee.
Jaime Garcia vs. Drew Hutchinson
Garcia is looking to rebound after his worst start since coming back from shoulder surgery, going just 5.0 innings and giving up six runs in the Cards 8-7 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Garcia has also given up at least two earned runs in each of his four starts this season, bringing his ERA to 5.47.
The southpaw faces off against the Jays’ Drew Hutchinson, who is 4-3 on the season with 66 strike-outs and a 1.18 WHIP.
Hutchinson is coming off a three-hit 7.0 innings affair against the Detroit Tigers, where he gave up no runs and struck out seven. This is the first time the Redbirds will face the 23-year-old right-hander.
