(BaseballStL) -- Yadier Molina and David Freese did not start in the third game of a four-game set against the New York Mets on Wednesday.

The decision to rest Molina and Freese came as little surprise with a day game scheduled for the series finale on Thursday.

Molina entered Wednesday tied for sixth in the National League with 47 hits and fourth with a .331 batting average. He went 1-for-8, including hitless in his last five at-bats, through the first two games against the Mets this series. His last scheduled day off came April 19.

With a 3-2 lead, Molina would enter as a pinch-hitter for Tony Cruz with two outs and runners on first and second in the eighth inning. He padded the Cardinals lead with an opposite field RBI single for a 4-2 lead.

Freese, who has hits in eight of his last 11 games, went 1-for-7 through the first two games of the series against the Mets. He has struggled through 26 games played with a .216 batting average this season.

The 30-year-old third baseman has rebounded with a .282 average for the month of May after hitting .163 in April.
