NEW YORK (AP) -- Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is praising Mark McGwire for admitting he used steroids while a player.

Selig says it should make McGwire's re-entry into the game "much smoother and easier." The former slugger has been hired by the St. Louis Cardinals as hitting coach.

Another former home run champ, Hank Aaron, says he forgives McGwire for using steroids. McGwire has admitted taking the drugs on and off for 10 years, including his banner year of 1998. He says he totally regrets using steroids, and that it was wrong.

He had been in self-imposed exile from public view since he refused to answer questions before Congress.

Once he was hired by the Cardinals in October to be their hitting coach, however, he knew he had to say something before the start of spring training in mid-February.

Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals seem willing to forgive Mark McGwire for using steroids and move on. One Cardinal fan says it's no surprise, but it's disappointing. Another fan wondered why it took McGwire so long to come forward.
