(BaseballStL) — The name Scott McGregor is gaining more and more traction as we go here in camp.

With Jason Motte and Jaime Garcia unable to be ready for Opening Day, the Cardinals had a couple more openings on the pitching staff than they initially thought.

Sidearm reliever Pat Neshek has done such a good job that he’s likely to receive one of them.  The other has been a little harder to identify. Lefty Tyler Lyons was given a golden chance to be the team’s long reliever but his 14+ ERA in camp didn’t exactly instill confidence in the staff.

Sam Freeman’s fastball still isn’t controlled enough to be considered big league ready. Keith Butler hasn’t pitched all that well either.

McGregor wasn’t even invited to big league camp at first but pitched well enough on the minor league side that he got promoted midway through. Will he do enough to warrant a roster spot? We have a week to find out.
