(BaseballStL) — St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has responded to an ad by the Milwaukee Brewers making a bold declaration and taking a swipe at the St. Louis Cardinals.
In a pitch to fans during the final stretch of All Star voting, the Milwaukee Brewers produced a video spot in the vein of political campaign ads supporting their 28-year-old backstop.
“Jonathan Lucroy is not only the best catcher in the National League, but most importantly, he’s not a St. Louis Cardinal.”
The video focuses on St. Louis, suggesting fans of other teams are tired of seeing so many members of the Gateway Gang in the Midsummer Classic.
On Thursday, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay responded to the ad by inviting Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to a Cardinals game.
“In the first week of Aug., our Cardinals will be playing your Brewers here in St. Louis,” Slay says in a video shot by News 4. “I’d like to invite you to join me for one of the games.”
Slay says not only can they compare notes on their cities, but also local beers and one other thing.
“Oh yeah, we can compare catchers. Ours is a five-time All-Star, a six-time Gold Glover and he wears World Series rings,” Slay said. “If you think you can make it, give me a call.”
We can only hope Barrett responds to Slay’s invite. And you’ll be sure we’ll be on top of it if and when he does.
