(BaseballStL) – Mike Matheny was candid after Friday night’s loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, their fifth loss in six games, about the struggle the Cardinals are going through currently

“I think they realize right now that we’re not right, for whatever reason,” he said, “Maybe right’s not the word as much as confident.”

Over the last seven days, the Redbirds have just 53 hits in 264 at-bats, giving them a .201 average with just 21 runs scored. So with an average of three runs per game and a pitching staff with a 4.38 ERA, the Cardinals aren’t scoring enough runs.

“There’s a confidence when you walk into the box,” Matheny continued, “and you start looking at some things we’ve done this year and they’re a little off pace.”

Even the best batters are struggling. Yadier Molina, who is sitting Saturday, has a .125 average over the past seven days. Jhonny Peralta is just a little bit better, hitting .148 and Allen Craig is hitting just .214 during the same span.

That’s little to none production from the four, five and six spots of the line-up.

“The reality is, it’s not gone. It’s just not here right now,” Matheny said, “It’s just a matter of trying to figure out how we get back there.”

And they better find it soon as they continue to slip further in the standings, with a record of 31-31 and five games back from Milwaukee and the Pirates hot on their heels at just a game behind the Cards.

“We don’t care if [other teams] have fear or not,” Matheny added, “but we have to have the production that puts fear into people.”
