(BaseballStL) -- With exactly one month left until the end of the season, the Cardinals face the Milwaukee Brewers in a pivotal September series next week. However, who the Cardinals will opt to throw in the series opener Thursday is still unclear.
Thursday would be Justin Masterson's scheduled start, but in his six starts with the Redbirds he's allowed 24 earned runs and a 7.90 ERA. The Cardinals have gone 3-3 in those 6 starts.
The other candidates for the start Thursday include Michael Wacha, Tyler Lyons and Marco Gonzales. Wacha makes a rehab start in Tulsa Sunday night for Double-A Springfield.
Lyons and Gonzales pitched in the double header Saturday. Lyons pitched 4.2 innings of shut-out baseball while amassing 8 strike outs. Gonzales earned his first win in MLB Saturday night giving up only one run in 6.0 innings of work.
"He's a possibility. Tyler's a possibility. Justin's a possibility," manager Mike Matheny said Sunday, "This isn't the time or place to make those kind of statements. Everyone's a candidate. We just want to put the guy out there that's going to give us the best chance to win."
"We'll make a statement soon, but just not right now."
And to be fair to Masterson, the Cards have only won 1 of Adam Wainwright's starts this month and only 2 of Shelby Miller's starts.
