(BaseballStL) - Take a pen and paper and write down the Cards projected batting order for 2014. Do that and compare what you write with some others. Chances are Matt Carpenter will appear first, Matt Holliday third, Allen Craig fourth for just about everyone.
Second? Well, that's subject to be quite different.
So, who then is going to hit second for the Cardinals this season? It could be newly acquired shortstop Jhonny Peralta. It could be speedster Kolten Wong. It could eventually be super prospect Oscar Taveras.
"I know that's been a hot topic, really, all winter," manager Mike Matheny said. "I think we do ourselves a favor by continuing to watch how all this unfolds and how guys take their at-bats."
Mark Ellis is hitting second today behind Jon Jay against the Marlins but that's a product of several regulars getting the day off from playing in yesterday's exhibition opener. On days where Ellis is playing for the starter Kolten Wong he could even be another option.
"It could evolve even through the season. You guys have seen that before where we throw something out there, see how it comes together, when we find something that works we're not afraid to ride with it for a while," Matheny said.
The only constant when it comes to the number two spot in the batting order this season may very well be change.
