JUPITER, Fla. (BaseballStL) – Mike Matheny knows all about the challenges facing Marlins manager Mike Redmond this year. So he’s reached out and tried to help.
Redmond finds himself in nearly an identical situation as Matheny last season. Matheny’s first year as a big league skipper came while he was the youngest manager in baseball, an honor Redmond takes over in his first season.
Matheny took over the Cardinals with no previous coaching or managing experience. Redmond at least has two seasons managing in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system under his belt.
And with some of the similarities, including the fact that both are former big league catchers and their respective clubs share the Roger Dean Stadium complex during Spring Training, Matheny decided to try and pass along some useful information.
“I reached out to him,” Matheny said. “I always appreciated the fact that there were guys that reached out to me and not that I have this wealth of knowledge and experience, but fresh in my mind are some of the challenges of a guy stepping into that situation. We’ve talked quite a few times.”
Matheny said he spoke with Redmond on Saturday and the two clubs have scheduled at least one B game on the back fields at Roger Dean for the coming days.
