FORT MYERS, Fla (Baseball StL) -- Since 2013 kicked in the Cardinals haven’t exactly been the perfect picture of health.

Chris Carpenter was lost for the year when he tried to dial up his offseason program to get ready for spring training.  Rafael Furcal also is done following Tommy John surgery.

Jason Motte is likely headed to the disabled list with an elbow strain. Now David Freese and Carlos Beltran are no locks to be ready for opening day with back and toe issues, respectively.

But don’t think manager Mike Matheny is feeling sorry for himself.  And especially don’t think he’s expecting others to do the same.

Matheny says some clubs would think “’how could this happen to us and woe is me’.  We haven’t had a sniff of that at all.  It’s just ‘all right, now what?’.”

The Cards manager also says the teams that complain about injuries are usually losing teams that don’t win.

“They don’t realize it but somewhere in the culture of their club as soon as that excuse happens it’s hard to get away from it, even with it not being their intent,” Matheny said.
