(BaseballStL) — Cardinals manager Mike Matheny doesn't like to announce pitching plans too far in advance but this morning he did say what the team planned to do for the Grapefruit League opener on Friday February 28th.

Carlos Martinez will start.  Tyler Lyons will come in second.

"It just worked out well that way," Matheny said.

What Matheny means by that is they work backwards from the start of the regular season.  Adam Wainwright will start Opening Day and they count how many outings he needs to be ready.

Once they've mapped out who needs to start how many games, they can fill in the blanks with some of the other possible candidates.

Wainwright, Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller and Jaime Garcia are all expected to be in the starting rotation to begin the season.  Lance Lynn is the front runner for the last spot but Joe Kelly, Martinez and Lyons all are in competition for it.

The latter two get first crack at impressing a week from Friday.
