TAMPA, Fla. - Starter Lance Lynn was one pitch away from an almost perfect outing Monday against the New York Yankees at Steinbrenner Field. But he’ll gladly take how he pitched anyway.

Lynn allowed just two hits and one run - a solo shot to Kevin Youkilis on a hanging slider - in four solid innings.

“A slider that didn’t slide,” Lynn said. “That’s part of it and that’s why we’re down here working, trying to make sure that pitch is ready for the season. I made some good one’s early on so you can’t really harp on the bad one. Other than that one pitch I threw the ball pretty well.

“Today I just wanted to make sure I threw all my pitches and try to get ahead. I didn’t have the best success with that but I was able to make the pitch later in the count to get the ground ball and things like that.”

Lynn allowed four earned runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings in his first two starts but looked much better Monday in his third outing. He has three starts remaining before the regular season starts April 1 in Arizona.

“You still have time but when it’s all said and done you don’t want to give up runs or hits ever,” Lynn said. “It’s just part of our DNA, we don’t want to give up runs or hits but you have to go through some of those things this time of year just to get pitches better that aren’t as good as they need to be so you don’t have that issue during the season.

“I got four pitches and I’m feeling pretty comfortable with them. That’s what I care about, just trying to create that confidence with that third and fourth pitch as much as I can because everyone knows I’m going to be a fastball curveball guy, but if I have two other ones that I can come after them with, it’s going to make things a little easier for me throughout the year.”
