(BaseballStL) -- Jon Jay is clearly being fitted for a 4th outfield role on the Cardinals.

He’s played left field, center field and Thursday he’s playing in right field. Matheny has said that if both Peter Bourjos and Jon Jay are in the game at same time he’d rather have Bourjos in center due to his “plus-plus” defense.

Jay hasn’t done a whole lot of moving around over the last couple years because he’s been the primary center fielder, but his poor play down the stretch last year prompted the Cardinals to trade for Bourjos and move him back to a more fluid role.

He’s still expected to get starts over Bourjos in center based on certain matchups early, however.
