(FootballSTL) – In what was probably the worst kept secret in St. Louis sports, the Rams on Wednesday officially announced the hiring of Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator.
Word leaked out Williams would most likely serve as the team’s defensive coordinator after Tim Walton was fired a few weeks ago.
“I am excited about coaching this defense,” said Williams. “I would like to thank Jeff Fisher and the Rams organization for this opportunity and I am looking forward to getting to work and helping our defense become one of the best in football.”
In 15 seasons as defensive coordinator or head coach, Williams has led seven top-ten overall defenses.
Williams had worked under Fisher for six seasons with the Tennessee Titans and Houston Oilers, including four as defensive coordinator.
“As I’ve stated before, I believe Gregg is an outstanding football coach and is capable of taking our defense to the next level,” Fisher said.
A press conference will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday to formally announce Williams’ hiring.
Williams was initially hired as the Rams defensive coordinator in early 2012, but was suspended indefinitely for his role in the bounty scandal that rocked the league and the Saints.
He was not brought back by the Rams after his suspension ended and spent the 2013 season working with the Titans defense.
