(BaseballStL) - Earlier this week Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said the team would have a special plan for All Star catcher Yadier Molina. They would limit the amount of innings he sees behind home plate in preparation for a long, grinding season ahead.
It appears Matt Holliday is on a similar plan.
The left fielder will not play in today's Grapefruit League opener against Jose Fernandez and the Marlins but he will be the designated hitter tomorrow.
"For him we know he's going to grind through a long season and he'll be there every single day. We just want to get his timing right and not have him peak too soon," Matheny said.
The Cardinals have a boat load of depth in the outfield this spring with Oscar Taveras, Stephen Piscotty, James Ramsey, Randal Grichuk among many others. So finding players to take those at-bats shouldn't be a problem.
The key is to make sure the Cardinals highly paid left fielder doesn't get overworked in March.
"We want to make sure (Holliday is) ready when Opening Day rolls around," Matheny said. "He's in such great shape there's no question about that. It's a matter of getting him just enough but not getting him too much."
