(BaseballStL) – For the third consecutive game the Cardinals will be without Matt Adams in the starting line-up, but instead of starting Allen Craig at first and Jon Jay in right, the Redbirds recalled the hot hitting Randal Grichuk to boost the offense.
With Triple-A Memphis, Grichuk was batting .315 with 32 RBIs while pushing out a .451 average against lefties, which Grichuk will need as a starter against the Giants Madison Bumgarner.
In his earlier stint in the majors, Grichuk was just 3 for 21 and 7 strike outs.
Wainwright vs. Bumgarner
Cardinals’ ace, Adam Wainwright, hopes to right the ship after a disappointing loss Thursday to the San Francisco Giants.
Wainwright is bringing a scoreless innings streak of 20.0 into the game. Previously this season he had gone 25.0 innings before giving up five runs on May 2nd to the Cubbies.
Over the past three seasons, Wainwright has only lost once in four games pitched. In 28.2 innings against the Giants, Wainwright has given up just 6 earned runs and 24 strike-outs. Wainwright has faced the former Astro Hunter Pence and fanning the outfielder 12 times.
Wainwright will face off against Madison Bumgarner at 6-3. The two starters are in the top 5 of the NL for strike outs, Wainwright with 77 and Bumgarner at 75.
The Redbirds have not hit well against the Giants’ lefty, going just .169 in 83 at-bats. In 40 collective at-bats between Mark Ellis, Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina have just 6 total hits.
