ST. LOUIS (FootballStl
) -- Believe it or not, defensive end Michael Sam is not the only high profile rookie on this Rams team this year. I know it’s hard to believe. Take a minute and let that comment sink in. But it’s true. There are others on the roster.
2nd overall pick Greg Robinson is quite important to the future of the organization because he possesses the size and strength to dominate opponents. And after playing in his first NFL game, the exhibition loss to the Saints on Friday night, two things are abundantly clear regarding the offensive lineman.
He is versatile but he has a lot to learn.
“I had a few mental mistakes but I think I did fairly (well),” Robinson said.
The Rams are playing their rookie at both guard and tackle because depending on what happens with left tackle Jake Long early in the season it’s possible Robinson will have to switch back and forth between the two. He did just that in his first game.
“I was a little rusty at tackle but when I was at guard I gave up one sack on a little mental error. I think I did fairly well at both positions,” Robinson said.
The scouting report on Robinson when he was drafted is that he’s going to need a little time to develop before he reaches the enormous potential that’s been put on him as a football player. Anything less than being Orlando Pace would be a disappointment at this point…and that’s not really fair.
It’s going to take time with Robinson. He needs to get the mental aspect of the game down before he can just let his physical abilities take over for him. It may be a few weeks. Heck, it could be a few months.
But with his size all he needs to do is figure out the mental aspect and the Rams could have themselves a superstar for a long time.
