ST. LOUIS - The 74th Senior PGA Championship begins Thursday at Bellerive Country Club with more than 100 golfers taking place in the event. Several have experience on the course, some are even from the area and some have never stepped foot at Bellerive.
But no matter the experience level in town, the impression this course leaves on them is the same.
"It's awesome. It's, we think, the best course in St. Louis and Missouri and maybe even the region," Carbondale, Illinois native Jerry Tucker said. "It's only gotten better. It's really beautiful out. Everything's in great shape. Despite the rain everything looks like it's going to be perfect."
"I love it. It's really a great golf course," Scott Simpson told me today during his practice round despite having never played at Bellerive before. "It's got a great variety of holes. You've got some short ones. You've got some really long ones. And the greens are tough, that's probably the toughest part.
"I think the scores are going to be high this week. I think it's going to be hard," Simpson said.
"I've always enjoyed playing this golf course. It's a very difficult golf course," longtime professional Tom Watson said today. "To me it has a lot of variety. You have to fit a lot of the shots into the fairway. The way it's playing right now it's playing very long. I'm sure glad we're not playing the back tees that's for sure."
Multiple golfers have predicted some high scores this weekend, especially if the wind picks up.
