(BaseballStL) -- In his major league debut, Nick Greenwood recorded three strike outs and just two hits.

But he did allow a run in the eighth, a single to Daniel Murphy who came around to score on a single from Chris Young, to bring the Mets closer by a score of 6-2.

The Cardinals added another run in the fifth inning, now having scored runs in the first and third as well, and all three runs have been scored by Jon Jay.

Jay doubled with one out, then with a 1-2 count Matt Holliday threw his bat at the ball to drive it to center field and scored Jay, his 1,000 career RBI, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.

Allen Craig then added another RBI, his second of the game and 37th on the year, scoring Holliday from first. Then Big City Matt Adams stroked a ball down the right field line for an RBI triple. Yadier Molina earned a free pass which Jhonny Peralta made the Mets pay for by singling into right to score Adams and stay out of the double play.

Despite the work done by his offense in the bottom half of the third, Carlos Martinez almost gave the run away by loading the bases with only one out.

He gave up his third walk of the game to the lead-off man, Bobby Abreu, and then gave up a double to Lucas Duda. So with runners threatening at second and third with no outs, Martinez was able to get catcher Taylor Teagarden to pop out to short right.

But he fell behind Ruben Tejada 3-0 and then intentionally walked the man with the fourth ball. Then Kolten Wong made his second catch of the inning by stabbing at a sharp line drive from pitcher Jacob deGrom, giving Martinez the chance to get out of the inning unscathed.

During most of the inning, Seth Maness warmed up in the pen, but wasn't neededin the fourth.

The Cardinals responded in the next half inning to regain the lead.

Jon Jay hit his second single of the game and then went first to third on another single from Allen Craig. Matt Adams hit a back-to-back single, scoring Jay and pushing the score to 2-1.

Yadier Molina followed that with the third straight single of the inning, but Craig was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from second, ending the inning.

The Mets scratch their first run across the board in the third inning on a sacrifice fly.

Carlos Martinez struggled in the third, compared to the 14 pitches he threw in the first two innings, by allowing a lead-off walk to Ruben Tejada, even though the speed gun hit 100 mph.

Tejada advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then Eric Young beat out a throw from Jhonny Peralta that got away from Matt Adams, but the error was charged to Peralta. Tejada scored on the sacrifice from Curtis Granderson to tie the game as an unearned run for Martinez.

Martinez gave up a four pitch walk to Daniel Murphy to bring up David Wright who he got to strike out and end the inning.

After throwing just six pitches and getting two groundouts, Carlos Martinez went back out onto the mound in the second inning with a one run lead.

In their half of the first inning, the Cardinals capitalized on a one-out walk to Jon Jay. Matt Holliday singled to move Jay to second and then Allen Craig singled again, earning hs 36th RBI of the season.

But the inning ended with a 5-6-3 double play from Matt Adams.
