(BaseballStL) --The Redbirds finally got on the board 10.2 scoreless innings, although they still trail the Padres 4-1.

Matt Adams doubled to start the seventh inning followed by a sharp single past the diving third baseman from Jhonny Peralta.

Peter Bourjos then hit a ground ball to the shortstop who tried to turn the double play, but Bourjos beat out the throw to first allowing Adams to score. However, the inning ended on a pick-off play as Bourjos was caught leaning before he could get back to the bag at first.

But the Padres came back in their half of the seventh to tack on another run made possible by a mistake by Peralta. Instead of a tailor made double play, the ball shot through Peralta's legs with runners on first and third to score Everth Cabrera and putting runners on second and third.

Before exiting the game, Randy Choate intentionally walked Yasmani Grandal to load the bases. Manager Mike Matheny called upon double play guru Seth Maness for a ground ball, but he was unable to keep the Padres off the scoreboard they pushed another run across the plate.

The inning the got ugly as Bourjos tried to make a diving catch in center, but missed as the ball rolled passed him and cleared the bases for a 9-1 lead for the Padres.

A double, walk and homer later and the Padres took a 12-1 lead to bring up Jeff Francouer for the second time in the inning. He struck out in his first at-bat and then grounded out to count as the only two outs for the Padres in the seventh.

And that's where they game would end as the Cardinals were unable to mount any real comeback after the seventh inning.

Another error from Kolten Wong for the second straight night and a wild pitch from Joe Kelly lead to the Padres' second run of the game.

A pop fly to short right field dropped in between Wong and Oscar Taveras, allowing Alexi Armarista to advance all the way to second base. He advanced to third on a ground out to Matt Adams.

He came around to score on a wild pitch that Tony Cruz tried to flip to Joe Kelly in time, but Armarista's hand was in before the tag, giving the Padres a 2-0 lead.

Then in the fourth Jedd Gyorko went deep to left field for a solo shot to put the Padres up by three.

Things got worse as a shot down the left field line from the next Padres' batter Yonder Alonso hit the wall and then the base of the foul ball as it skirted away from Matt Holliday to give Alonso a triple. A base hit up the middle from Will Venable score Alonso for a 4-0 lead.

The Padres were able to crack one early against Joe Kelly grabbing their first run in the first inning, along with the lead.

Everth Cabrera stroked a line drive single into center field, but a fielder's choice from Alexi Aramista erased Cabrera on the bases. But it was Aramista who caused the Redbirds trouble.

With two outs the Padres' centerfielder swiped third base after advancing to second on a walk. Yangervis Solarte singled in Aramista to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.
