(BaseballStL) - Cardinals third baseman David Freese was not in the starting lineup Wednesday afternoon due to a bruised tailbone suffered in Monday's game after falling into the stands while attempting to catch a foul pop-up.

Freese leaned over a gate near the end of the Minnesota Twins dugout while attempting to make the catch when the gate opened and he flipped over it and into the stands. He landed hard on his tailbone and was immediately removed from the game.

The Cardinals were off on Tuesday.

"We're going to just keep ice on him but nothing that they are too concerned about," manager Mike Matheny said Wednesday morning. "He went after that ball hard. It was nice to see the effort, but we just want to make sure when you have this much time left in spring still that you don't push a guy out there when he's a little sore."

The injury is deemed minor and is not expected to keep Freese out very long.
