JUPITER, Fla. (Baseball StL) -- Cardinals third baseman David Freese suffered a bruised tailbone after flipping over a railing and falling into the stands while attempting to catch a foul pop up in Monday’s game against the Minnesota Twins at Roger Dean Stadium.
A gate near the end of the Twins dugout gave way as Freese was leaning over to make the catch, causing him to flip over the gate and fall into the stands. He was removed from the game but walked off under his own power.
“I just went over the railing,” Freese explained. “I was going for a pop up and went over the railing and the gate didn’t save me so I took a spill.
“I’ll be alright. It could have been worse.”
Freese wore an ice pack on his tailbone and lower back area while speaking to reporters back in the Cardinals clubhouse but downplayed the injury being anything serious. Of his fall, Freese joked,”It was graceful.”
