FORT MYERS, Fla - David Freese (back) and Carlos Beltran (toe) are still unavailable to play in Grapefruit League games despite the fact opening day is just a week away in Arizona.

Freese has been battling this back injury for a couple weeks now ever since he tumbled into the stands trying to catch a foul pop up.  Manager Mike Matheny says they’re going to give him a couple days to see how he responds to an anti-inflammatory shot but also admits a trip to the disabled list is possible.

“Could be,” Matheny said.

The question now centers around whether he’ll be ready for Arizona on April 1st and whether he’s gotten enough at-bats this spring to be ready if he is.

“He took a week off and you see what he did that first day back in (Port) St. Lucie,” Matheny said.  “He launches a ball to straight out right (for a home run).  He’s had about 40 at-bats, we’ll try and get him 50, so we’re nto far away.”

Beltran, meanwhile, is still bothered by a fractured toe and hopes to be ready by next week.  His status is day-to-day as well.
