(FootballSTL) -- Any time you’re the number one overall pick in an NFL draft - or any sport’s draft for that matter - there’s going to be an incredibly high amount of expectations put on you. And that’s exactly what Sam Bradford has discovered in his first few seasons with the St. Louis Rams.
Whether he likes it or not, he’s going to get compared with the most elite players in the entire league such as the Packers Aaron Rodgers, the Patriots Tom Brady and the Broncos Peyton Manning. Well after an up-and-down first three seasons that saw Bradford battle injuries in year two and lose nearly his entire offensive line at some point in year three, many in the Rams brass believe he’s due for a huge breakout in 2013.
Most will point to the weapons he has around him. Signing a free agent tight end like Jared Cook and drafting a receiver such as Tavon Austin in the first round provides a level of support Bradford just has not had in his time here. Now that he’s had a full preseason with these new guys here, Jeff Fisher says he likes what he sees from his signal caller.
“Had we felt like he needed more work, we would have created a situation where we’d let him play (Thursday) night, but I think he had a good preseason,” Fisher said. “He’s got a great understanding of what we’re doing. He’s doing some really good things on the practice field. He’s ready, he’s ready to go.”
The big question now becomes, as a four year veteran, will Bradford be given more responsibility within the offense for game planning?
“As you mature in the system, I think it’s easier from a quarterback’s standpoint to be able to say, ‘Hey, I like this,’ as opposed to, ‘Yeah, I’m not real sure about that.’ As he matures, as you go through the week, you experiment with some things. Is he comfortable with taking it into the game? If not, we’ll take it out. We want him to be comfortable with everything that we’re doing,” Fisher said.
It remains to be seen exactly how much of a rapport Bradford has with these new weapons. Chemistry was a crucial aspect of his relationship with Danny Amendola since they had played together for a few seasons. Now that he doesn’t have that, he has to start all over again.
