(BaseballStL) -- The trade deadline in Major League Baseball is just a few days away. It’s really the last chance – without the hassle of passing guys through waivers – to make midseason corrections to your club. Sometimes deals come together. Sometimes they don’t.
And one of the things Cardinals GM John Mozeliak is so good at is walking away from deals that don’t work out well for him. He refuses to make a bad trade just to say he made a trade.
But watching this Cards team over the last few days and weeks, one thing is clear. It needs a boost. It needs a spark. It needs some new blood to come in and shake things up a little bit.
That doesn’t mean a trade needs to be forced. That doesn’t mean Oscar Taveras needs to be shipped off as part of a huge blockbuster to make some headlines and get things cooking inside the clubhouse.
It just means if there is something there that can happen, preferably something on the larger side of the scale, it would be quite beneficial to this bunch.
Just watch. Just watch the way they’re going about it right now and you’ll see a group that’s largely stale and boring. The Brewers squandered a six game lead in the division before the All Star break but actually just picked three back up in the matter of a few days. If the postseason began today the Redbirds wouldn’t even be in the postseason.
For a team that came into this season with sky high expectations – possibly even approach 100 wins this season – they have fallen far short of that through roughly four months. We’re far beyond the evaluating stage and we’re now into the reactionary stage.
Allen Craig hasn’t hit. Yadier Molina is hurt. Despite a recent uptick in power Matt Holliday hasn’t played worth a $17 million a year player. The starting rotation, while good, is struggling to chew up the necessary innings to save the bullpen.
It’s impossible to know who’s available on the trade market. It’s impossible to know who’s available at the right price. It’s impossible to know who’s available at the right price that the Cardinals would actually have a need for.
Mozeliak is the only one who knows that. And if something can help the Cardinals on the field, it almost certainly could help even more just because it’ll shake things up right now.
