(BaseballStL) — The Cardinals had one final roster move to announce before the season starts Monday. Mark Ellis will begin the season on the disabled list, and Pete Kozma will take his spot on the roster.
Ellis is suffering from patellar tendonitis, and is slotted for the 15-day DL.

“I think he’s always been in that mode where he feels like he can push through things, but I think he realized he’s not 100 percent,” said manager Mike Matheny.
Ellis had been battling discomfort and possibly reaggravated the knee injury on a play at third base in spring training. With the injury, the veteran infielder said he wasn’t as effective as he wanted to be heading into the season.
“It’s one thing to go out there and play hurt and be fine, but to actually help the team and to help the team win ball games it needs to get a little better,“ he said.
Pete Kozma will begin the season on the bench for the Cardinals, adding a defensive backup and possible right handed bat off the bench.
“I view him as an all-around- as we all know- a very good defender who can go in there as a right-handed bat,” Matheny said. “We’ll see how it plays out but right now he’s a guy that deepens our bench.”
In the meantime, expectations are that Ellis will be back to action without any setbacks.
