JUPITER, Fla.—On days rookie Kolten Wong does not play it was assumed veteran Mark Ellis would fill that void.  His one year, $5 million contract was supposed to suggest that.  It will be true once the regular season arrives, of course, but for now Ellis is sidelined for a few days with tendinitis in his left knee.

That forces Mike Matheny to go down the depth chart and use utility man Daniel Descalso.

Descalso has been forced to be the primary backup option to Jhonny Peralta at shortstop and Matt Carpenter at third while serving as the third second baseman behind Wong and Ellis.  He’s responded with a nice spring training that’s seen him hit over .300 in Grapefruit League play.

Here’s the rest of Mike Matheny’s lineup as the Cardinals take on the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium:

1) Matt Carpenter - 3B

2) Jon Jay - RF

3) Matt Holliday - LF

4) Allen Craig - 1B

5) Yadier Molina - C

6) Jhonny Peralta - SS

7) Daniel Descalso - 2B

8) Peter Bourjos - CF

9) Lance Lynn - P

Lance Lynn will make his fourth start of spring training - putting him around the 80-pitch mark - and will be followed by Trevor Rosenthal, Kevin Siegrist, Keith Butler, Jorge Rondon and Scott McGregor
