(FootballStL) -- The St. Louis Rams have cut defensive end Michael Sam and 20 other players to trim the roster down to 53, the team announced Saturday.

Sam had 11 tackles and 3 sacks in the three preseason games with the Rams. However, Saturday's news puts a hold on Sam's quest to become the first openly gay player to make an NFL roster.

According to ESPN, a source said the Rams would like to sign Sam to their 10-player practice squad.

The other 31 NFL teams have 24 hours to put in a claim for Sam. He hit the waiver wires at 3 p.m. central time Saturday.

Among the other 20 players cut by the Rams was back-up quarterback Garrett Gilbert. For additional information on the roster moves, click here.
