JUPITER, Fla. -- Just because Carlos Martinez continues to dazzle in his trial run as a starting pitcher here in spring training in no way means he's a lock to remain in that role.

The Cardinals still have a couple weeks to determine if he or Joe Kelly will round out the five-man starting rotation entering the regular season.

And Mike Matheny says they plan on using every last day to continue evaluating.

"We're just going to continue to let them pitch.  All of them," Matheny said. "This stuff sometimes works itself out.  We'll keep watching closely.  It's not time to make those statements or decisions.

A lot of the decision will come down to how well Kelly and Martinez pitch.  A lot will come down to how the rest of the bullpen shapes up.

"We have to take everything into consideration.  When they go out there and compete, pitching is the most important thing they should be thinking about.  Not this other stuff, stuff that's beyond their control," Matheny said.
